The oldest toy library started in Los Angeles, California in 1935 during the Great Depression to give children access to toys when families could not afford them and to foster learning, responsability, and creativity. Since that time toy libraries have spread around the world. They are particularly popular in Europe, India, Australia, and Singapore.
In the United States there are about 400 toy libraries, according to the USA Toy Library Association. Some are non-profits like we are, and some a small business, usually started by moms who have a vision for what children can learn through play.
Many eco-concious families see the benefit of sharing and reusing toys which reduces waste and saves many toys from the landfill.
Children grow and develop so fast and a toy that was a favorite is now uninteresting to the child. The early years of a child’s life is a period when neural connections are being laid down and the brain is most receptive to learning. Play is a child’s work, and they discover so much through it.
Our Story
Our founder, Lisa Phillips, has been interested in toy libraries since she first heard of the concept, and a few years ago started purchasing toys with the idea of opening a toy library.
As an educator, she knew how much children benefit from creative play as they explore their ideas individually and with others. As a mom, she also knew how expensive toys are and how fast children’s interests change. Toy clutter is a source of stress for many families, but with a toy library they can play with someting, bring it back and choose something else.
